The Power of Writing

Watch what you say!”, “The tongue is powerful!”, “watch what you wish for!” etc., etc. An endless list of sayings that concern the tongue exist within our dictionaries. And the list goes on and on…

Majority of the time when we speak, these are words on everyone’s lips and on everyone’s minds. For a long time (probably since Adam & Eve), we have known the tongue to be a soft but powerful and deadly organ capable of destroying the mightiest of men.  It is said that the tongue can easily lead to your assent in society, yet with the same guile swiftly tackle you down rougher than a rugby or hockey player.  End result?? Many people think twice before opening their mouths (at least when in a rational state of mind).

So why is the tongue so powerful?? The answer is simple and well-known: because what we speak may/will come to pass. So if we speak well of ourselves and others, good things will befall us and whomever we speak well of. Vice versa is also true. What we speak is also what drives us; it is what lies on our thoughts and our hearts. Like an outlet of sorts.

So engrossed are we in this that we may not have stopped to ask ourselves: “Is the tongue the only powerful organ in our bodily arsenal?” I know for sure not many of you have asked themselves this, some may even think of it as a stupid question. I have thought about it, and something immediately popped up into my mind: the hands!!

The hands you ask?? Yes!! Put simply, what we write is what we think, and what we say is what we think. This can be summed up logically as:
Your thoughts are expressed in --> what you write and --> what you speak

Indeed when your mentor or teacher told you to write down your goals in life; who you wanted to be and what you wanted to accomplish, most of us simply brushed the thought aside.  “How could some dry ink on a piece of paper help me?” was the common question.  Indeed in a physical point of view it doesn’t make sense. But what about the mental? The psychological? Even the spiritual? Did we put these into consideration?

When you write down a sentence on a piece of paper, it has just as much power as speaking out the same words. Majority of us just don’t do it; maybe because we’re too lazy, or because we feel it’s stupid, or maybe even because it’s a waste of time and resources!! Writing words down is the first step in actualizing that thought, dream or goal(s) that you have. It turns one from a dreamer to a doer, quite literally!! When you write an aspiration down, you are subconsciously telling yourself that you are ready to turn it into a reality, no matter the hurdles that may come.

In the same way a negatively spoken word is bad, the same goes for a negatively written word. Words written down to ridicule, scorn or look down upon others may eventually come round to bite you!

So let’s start practicing the art of writing. And not just writing, but writing in the positive. A positive writer is a positive thinker!
